Founded in 1972, ACRI is a policy-driven NGO protecting the human rights and civil liberties of all people living in Israel and the Occupied Territories. ACRI upholds the pillars of democracy by demanding policy change where current practices violate basic rights and liberties. It works together with the courts, the Knesset, government agencies and civil society to tackle Israel’s most urgent and egregious human rights injustices. Among ACRI's focus areas are the Arab minority, migrants and refugees, the Occupied Territories, and broad social and economic rights. ACRI promotes public debate about human rights as well as providing extensive media content in Hebrew, Arabic and English to educate and inform. During the current crisis, ACRI has worked tirelessly to protect both individual rights and the infrastructure of democracy. The organisation can point to success in protecting freedom of protest in this period and has lobbied successfully to freeze public housing payments for the most vulnerable. Other recent wins include ensuring that no-one was cut off from electricity as a result of debt during Israel's lockdown.
